Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

When you’re trying to understand the basics of how your policy works, you’ll need to know a few words that you’ll hear often:

  • Maximum- The maximum is the capped-off amount of money that your dental insurance company will agree to pay for your treatments over the course of a calendar year.
  • Deductible- The deductible is a set amount of money that your dental insurance company will require you to pay out of your own pocket before your benefits kick-in.
  • Premium- The premium is the annual or monthly amount of money that you pay to receive coverage.
  • In-Network- In-network means that a dentist has come to a contractual agreement with an insurance company to offer certain rates and fees to patients with that plan.

What Does Your Dental Insurance Plan Cover?

Again, it’s important to emphasize that every dental insurance plan’s coverage can vary, and in order to determine whether yours will extend benefits to a certain treatment you need, it’s best to contact them directly. That being said, many dental insurance companies base coverage off of a 100-80-50 policy. This means that they cover 100 percent of the cost of preventive care, 80 percent of basic treatments, and 50 percent of more serious procedures.
